Tell All Your Friends Minature Tigers- Ben Folds

Phoenix’s Miniature Tigers are gearing up to warm stages for Ben Folds during three weeks in February.
The band will be announcing solo dates too!
Kicking off with Ben Folds in the band will join Ben Folds for nearly three weeks beginning February 11 in Princeton, NJ, and concluding March 1 in Charlotte, NC.  On March 2nd, Miniature Tigers will hook up for a March tour with Dear and the Headlights winding their way into SXSW.

Miniature Tigers’ sound was forged in the bedroom of frontman Charlie Brand, only to quickly outgrow the space, with the band soon finding  itself on stage, in the studio and signed to Phoenix’s Modern Art  Records in short order. Brand’s lyrics – a mix of deeply personal insights and playful references to the disparate cultural artifacts that  have informed his existence – and effortlessly constructed indie-pop arrangements have made fans in his native Phoenix and beyond. They stretch to Los Angeles, where he reconnected with drummer, collaborator and fellow charter member of the band Rick Schaier while living in Hollywood, and far beyond thanks to the Internet, which it seems people are into these days.

Miniature Tigers
’ debut album “Tell it to the Volcano” runs the lyrical gamut, taking inspiration from and referencing TV’s Lost (which rates a Dharma Initiative sticker on Brand’s acoustic) as easily as it probes the joy and heartbreak of Charlie’s own life, while managing not to take itself too seriously. Brand wrote the album while on the lam – not from the law, but rather from a relationship he described as “brutal.” He left Phoenix to clear his head, landing in Los Angeles and collaborating with his friend Rick to complete the long-gestating album. It was his catharsis – with cannibals and volcanoes stepping in for the real-world problems that had both beset and inspired him. In the end the album represents Charlie’s effort to codify, examine, and ultimately move past a 2-year stretch of his life.Charlie and Rick are joined in their live incarnation by friends and collaborators Lou Kummerer on bass and Lawrence Hearn on lead guitar and keyboards, for performances that seem to give equal time to playing songs and intra-band joking. They aim for a controlled chaos aesthetic that eschews “auto-pilot” at all costs.

In an effort to further confound the expectations of those around the band, they chose to have their video directed by someone who had never helmed one before…or at least never an authorized music video. The band tapped “Yacht Rock” creator JD Ryznar to direct their video for Cannibal Queen in the hopes he would recreate the magic of his wildly popular Internet video series. Ryznar quickly assimilated the band’s aesthetic
and turned in a video equal parts “Weird Science” and “Frankenstein,” to the band’s delight.

Tell it to the Volcano” is currently available on iTunes, as well as a limited-edition letterpressed CD package and on vinyl at shows and via the band’s web site. They’ll be touring through the winter of 2009, when  the album will find its way to stores through an official retail release.

Phoenix, Arizona’s Miniature Tigers release their debut album “Tell it to the Volcano” on Modern Art Records this Spring. The new album comes on the heels of their two EP’s and stellar nods from press at CMJ ’08.

The band is thrilled to announce the addition of Phantom Planet’s Darren Robinson to their touring band. Robinson’s mainstay gig has gone on an indefinite hiatus, allowing him time to work with some new collaborators. The band is currently working out their live show for their upcoming dates, including a hometown headliner at Modified Arts, a short run with Lenka and a tour with Dear & The Headlights leading into SXSW.

“Miniature Tigers couldn’t have have arrived at a better time. Tell It To The Volcano boasts a collection of well-crafted pop songs, free of pretention and often sun from the perspective of a quirky, lovelorn troubadour.”

Troy Cook Jr. Takes "The Stage"

The Stage

Sometimes I forget the great entertainment we of have just down the road in Nashville. I am so use to covering festivals that I forget there is a whole world around me. Thanks to Barbara Doss Brewer of Stardust International I was reminded so one Sunday we took a road trip to Nashville. With her sister in-law Monta we headed to The Stage In Nashville on Broadway. For those of you who aren’t familiar with The Stage it was the home of the Roy Acuff exhibit. Back in the day he had his treasures on display in this very site. It is rich with history and the mural on the wall shows legions of the past while featuring the stars of the present. There is no cover charge unless there is a special event. For more information on The Stage go to thestageonbroadway.com

I had completely forgotten that the bars on Broadway are open during the day, offering not only some of the finest entertainment in town but you can grab a sandwich and soft drink also. In my case I have a coffee. You can also gab a beer or mixed drink – after all it is a bar. All the acts on Broad work for tips, I believe this to be one of the Nashville’s longest traditions.

We went to see Troy Cook, Jr. He is appearing at The Stage on Sundays between 11.00 am and 2.00 p.m. This young man is simply country. Smooth and laid back he’s quite a contrast to some of the musicians today. He doesn’t jump, climb, run around the stage. Troy Cook Jr.He sings and plays the guitar. There are some musicians that just need a guitar and a stool. They have the ability to tell you a story. They are the musicians that seem to be singing directly to you. Troy Cook, Jr. is also a gifted musician and songwriter, who has the ability to play several instruments, (steel guitar, mandolin, dobro & bass guitar, fiddle & drums) To be so young that is quite an accomplishment in itself. I will never claim to be an expert on any music, but I really enjoy the laid back style of Troy Cook, Jr. He is exactly the way he sings “Simply County” with boots and faded jeans. He is a traditional country music singer. From the slow moving ballads that reminds you of yesterday to the 2 step that brings back fun and romance. His music reminds me of Nashville’s best on the Opry. With songs like “Plain and Simple Country”. A quick paced two step or one of my favorites “Call in Well.” He has many slow and story telling songs such as “Wine, Women and Song” & “Mexico.” You can hear a sample on http://studio515.net/site/clients/ or on http://www.soundclick.com/bands/default.cfm?bandID=61714. I hope that you can stroll on by the Stage on any Sunday afternoon and take in the show. Troy Cook, Jr. and the Tennessee Two that have been backing him up take request and have great sense of humor. "Call In Well" & Join Us At The Stage

“Call in Well” and come on down . Remember to tip the band and the bartenders.
